Goodbye 2011, hello 2012!

That will be everyone’s cheer as the clock strikes twelve tomorrow evening.  But just before we say goodbye to 2011, let us take a walk down the memory lane and recount the most popular buzzwords of the expiring year.

Yes.  Buzzwords.  You’ve heard them, you’ve read about them and you might actually have said them.  Here are the best (and worse?) buzzwords that conquered 2011:
(originaly posted on gmanetwork.com by Andreo Calonzo)

11. Tsunami Walk

Who could have forgotten Shamcey Supsup’s trademark walk?  Swaying like a true tsunami in the middle of its ravage, Ms. Supsup has as well taken the international audience with this walk during her impressive performance at the 2011 Miss Universe beauty pageant.  She ended up third runner up that made her whole nation erupt in joy.

10.  Wagas

The Tagalog translation of pure, this word has been given a new meaning within the year.  Use for expressing excessiveness, Filipinos can’t seem to get enough of this word.  “Wagas ang paggamit ng salitang ito!”

9.   Dougie

Do you know how to dougie?  If not, then you must have slept in the cave for the past twelve months.  As irritating as they may sound for others, Teach Me How to Doughie a song popularized by Cali Swag District, has become widely popular around the globe and the local shores of the Philippines was no exemption.  Dougie is  a hip-hop dance generally performed by moving one's body in a
shimmy style and passing a hand through or near the hair on one's own head.  From actors to politicians to just everybody else, dougie and its “instructional song” became regular guests to parties.

8.   Havey and waley

Popularized by ABS-CBN’s noontime show, the two words are equally translated to approve and disapprove.  Havey is for approval. Example: “I like your shirt, havey na havey!” Waley on the other hand is use for disapproval, “Grabe, yan na ba yung sinasabi mong maganda mong damit? Eh waley naman yan eh!”

7.  Unkabogable

Another lingo popularized and this time by the enigmatic comedian of ABS-CBN, Vice Ganda.  Synonymous to unbeaten, this word was even used for Vice Ganda’s latest movie, which now holds the record for the highest grossing local movie of all time.

6.  Cyber Bullying

With the rise of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, among others, cyber bullying has also become a common occurrence in the cyber world.  People can now easily throw criticisms to anyone with the use of easy and fast technology.  Just a few taps on the computer and boom, another victim has been bullied.

5.  Milk tea

This generation’s version of Zagu (the drinks which has been popularized in the early 2000s), milk tea has been the favourite of many drinking aficionados who prefer milk with the addition tea over popular coffee or plain tea and plain milk.

Hot or cold, milk tea is the new 'it' drink.

4.  Angry Birds

Who would have thought the simple game could produce humungous aftermath?  From computer screens to stone-cold merchandise, Angry Birds has taken the world, including Philippines, by storm.  Now, the game is immortalized in bags, shirts, cups, game boards, stickers and other merchandises that consumers, specially kids, just love to have.

3.  Azkals

No, not the ‘asong kalye’ that Filipinos use to refer to stray dogs, but the mix breed of football players that inspired the relatively young football nation to support one of the world’s most popular sport.  Composed mainly of good looking half-Pinoy, half-European young gentlemen, the team drew the attention of Filipino audience by highlighting their players’ assets.  Nevertheless, they hope that one day Pinoys could catch the football fever, not only the feverish temperature they feel whenever they see the players.

Aside from Azkals failed attempt to win the qualifying match for 2012 Brazil World Cup, another highlight of the team this year was their friendly match against L.A Galax, feauturing non other than the porter boy of football himself, David Beckham.

2.  Planking

The simple act of lying face down in the most bizarre places became viral this year.  Almost everyone has their own version of planking and not even the proposed Anti-Planking law of the Philippines could have stopped the eager supporters of planking.
Planking has also generated other weird positions that caught the interests of youngsters and other young at heart, like owling and horsing.

1.  Trending Topic

These two words were fully utilized by FIlipnos this year.  They have discovered the power of tweets and tweeting.  Trending topic became the gauge of popularity.  If the topic is popular enough it could land a spot on the local trending topic list or even the coveted trending worldwide label if it’s too popular.

PS: The author of this entry planned to write something about the biggest news and newsmakers of 2011 (local and international) but then thought that a lot of people would make their own list of the same theme and adding another would be a waste of cyber space.  So instead, the author had come up with a revamped list based on what she heard on her favourite radio program.  It turned out the list originated from GMA-7 so if you want to check out the original list here is the link:

stuffs, and it's now known as Santa Claus house.

Everybody gets excited as the famous ‘ber’ months – September, October, November, and of course December – are approaching. Usually, Filipinos start digging in their bodegas or storage areas for their hidden ornaments like the Christmas lights from last year, folded Christmas trees, parols, and other Christmas decorations.

It’s been a Filipino tradition to decorate their house when Christmas is near, even joining competitions in Christmas tree decorating and attending lighting of Christmas trees in Municipal Halls and Plazas.

There’s nothing more exciting than a Filipino Christmas where families gather and eat together, spreading the love to everyone.

Giving of Gifts

People can’t get enough of gifts. Even before it is ‘ber’ month, Filipinos already think of gifts they will give to the members of their family, friends, and relatives. And it’s been part of the Filipino Christmas that Ninong and Ninangs or the Godfathers and Godmothers give gifts to their inaanak.

Giving of gifts is one special activity Filipinos enjoy before the Christmas Eve. And of course, it includes also the shopping of the items to wrap. That’s why people go to malls, night markets, and tiangges like the ones in Divisoria, Greenhills, and Dapitan in spite of the crowd.

And there are the school and church Christmas parties that include the exchanging of gifts. Parents become busy choosing and buying clothes for their children especially on the clothes they will wear for Christmas parties.

Before everyone has their holiday vacation, gifts are wrapped and presented so as not to forget it when the opening of gifts on December 25 arrives.

Simbang Gabi (Misa de Gallo, Morning Watch)

On December 16, Filipinos attend the so-called Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo for the Catholics and Morning Watch for other Christian religions. It is a nine-day mass done at dawn or night, attended by many churchgoers.

It is known that once you completed the nine-day mass or at the 24th day of December, whatever you wish will come true.

After the Simbang Gabi, churchgoers can eat the celebrated bibingka and puto bumbong, a kakanin or delicacy made of rice flour and coconut milk put in a bamboo wood and cooked in charcoal, spread with margarine and sprinkled with grated coconut, which is always present during the holidays outside churches and on the streetsides.

The making of Puto Bumbong

In Southern Tagalog particularly in Binan, Laguna, puto bumbong is paired with tea composed of dried avocado leaves.

Grocery Shopping for Noche Buena

Before the Noche Buena, there’s the grocery shopping that mommies and children usually love.

Mostly, pushcarts contain a big can of fruit cocktail, all-purpose cream, ham, keso de bola, spaghetti sauce, pasta, milk, cheese, mayonnaise, macaroni, apples, oranges, grapes, and many more, depending on what the families want to prepare and cook for their feast.

But shoppers couldn’t just grab anything they want. They are advised to check the labels especially for the price and the expiration date, making sure that the price is not too high and is based on the Suggested Retail Price or SRP presented by the Department of Trade and Industry or DTI, and the product is not expired. This will ensure shoppers of their rights and protection.

However, Filipinos doesn’t care much about the price, as long as they’re happy and everyone is enjoying, they’ll buy everything to make their Noche Buena a big feast.

On the other hand, there are many Filipinos who are experiencing great poverty, so even without food in their plate, as long as they are together, they will feel happy and be contented. And it’s one characteristic that makes Filipinos unique and special.

Is Christmas the Christmas you know?

Christmas isn’t just about the gifts, the brand new clothes and toys, and the food. It’s more of rejoicing the birth of Jesus Christ and thanking Him for the blessings he’s given and is continuing to give people. So in this coming Christmas, people should take time thinking of ways to thank Him.

It’s also the time for long distance relatives to see each other again and have fun together, making every moment counts.

Make your Christmas worthwhile and enjoy the Christmas spirit with an awesome spirit. Give love on Christmas day! <3

Wishing you a very merry Christmas,
